Refugees are people fleeing violence or persecution. They are defined and protected by international law, and must not be expelled or returned to situations where their life or freedom are at risk.
At UNHCR, we have been protecting and assisting refugee men, women and children for over half a century.
Refugee protection includes safety from being returned to danger, access to fair and efficient asylum procedures, and measures to ensure that basic human rights are respected and a longer-term solution is pursued.
UNHCR works around the clock to accomplish all of this, but we can’t do it alone.
To respond to the needs of refugees in settlements and in the communities in Nigeria, UNHCR works in support of the government, regional and local authorities as well as in partnership with humanitarian and refugee-led organizations.
